Kitchen Utensils with Fruit, 2026
Janine Lees explores the theme of musical performance and how it connects to human emotion in this painting. By observing the rhythmic flow and soft texture of the silky blue cloth, her canvas reflects a soft undertone of peace and tranquility which is reflected in the harmonious cool palette.
As if listening to a classical concerto, a solo instrument is represented in the painting by slow movements in the folds and undulations of the silky fabric that plays an interesting role in creating a rhythmic dance and a sense of flow that contrasts with the stillness and serenity of overall composition. Subtle movement leads the eye up, over and around the canvas whereby the gravitational pull of the heavy jar grounds the entire composition.
Realism is observed within various textures of to reveal a visceral quality of the finished piece, soft flowing lustrous fabrics are juxtaposed with waxy fruit and the undulating surface of wooden utensils nestled inside a heavyweight glazed pot.
Vibrant contrasting hues placed in the centre of the composition combine forces with the orchestra to provide a spirited finale.
