Dilapidated Shed, 2024
The Dilapidated Shed depicts a crumbling old shed at the bottom of Janine Lees’s garden, a familiar structure that has gradually surrendered to the seasons. Each winter, another piece falls away, yet somehow the old shed continues to stand.
The imperfect, undulating surface of the painting reflects the weathered wooden framework that supports its ageing felt roof and shattered windows. Lees has embraced an impressionistic approach to echo this sense of fragility and decay, allowing the paint itself to feel worn, broken and alive.
Inspired by the work of Camille Pissarro, the painting is built from rich, earthy tones arranged across the landscape in horizontal layers. These bands of colour create a subtle sense of movement, drawing the eye through the foreground towards the faint outline of the York skyline in the distance.
What began as a neglected structure at the bottom of the garden becomes an exploration of endurance, imperfection and the quiet beauty found in things that are slowly falling apart.
