A DAY IN KESWICK2

A Day in Keswick, 2024

A Day in Keswick captures a fleeting moment of family life within the expansive landscape of the Lake District. A father takes his two young sons and their dog out for the day, surrounded by the quiet grandeur of mountains, forests and open water. The scene has the quality of a memory caught in an instant, where the landscape becomes as important to the experience as the people within it.

Lees uses an impressionistic approach, combining vibrant colour with expressive mark-making to explore the varied textures and atmosphere of the natural environment. The expansive lake dominates the composition, its still surface painted in layers of greens, blues and violets that reflect the surrounding landscape and create a sense of depth and tranquillity. Beyond it, pine forests rise into the rugged mountains, gradually fading into the distance.

At the centre of the composition, the father throws a ball towards the water, his raised arm creating a strong vertical line that anchors the painting. His upright figure echoes the tall, still forms of the pine trees beyond, creating a subtle visual relationship between the human presence and the landscape.

In the foreground, the two boys are absorbed in their own discoveries. The older child searches amongst the rocks while the younger watches his dog chase the ball into the lake. Their quiet concentration contrasts with the movement of the dog and the father's gesture, creating the impression of a genuine, unposed moment rather than a carefully arranged scene.

The densely painted pine forest and imposing mountains give the lower and outer sections of the composition a sense of weight, while the expansive sky provides a contrasting area of light and space. Painted in delicate shades of pink, peach and violet, it creates a moment of visual respite and reinforces the feeling of being surrounded by open air.

Through expressive brushwork, vibrant colour and the intimacy of an ordinary family moment, A Day in Keswick explores the enduring connection between people, memory and the natural world. The painting celebrates not simply a day spent in the landscape, but the fleeting experiences that become lasting memories.
