Bio
Born in 1970, Northallerton, England, Janine Lees has been studying under the tutorship of Guy Noble, course leader from Central Saint Martins, London since 2023. Her work focuses on key moments and the strong connections she makes to historical art, resulting in compelling visual representations. Recent paintings reveal a deep awareness, both intellectual and sensory, of how certain subjects have been represented over time by a variety of artists such as Titian, Rubens, Pissarro, Monet, Constable, Klimpt and Diebenkorn as she reimagines and challenges the original narrative from her unique perspective. Works from across the artist's career range from pen and ink illustrations, graphite sketches, coloured pencil portraits and paintings in oil.
A significant contributor to the coloured pencil realism movement that came to prominence in the early 2010's, Lees reinvigorated contemporary animal portraiture by challenging the limits of the medium and elevating its potential. She is recognised by some of the world's leading coloured pencil art institutions and has exhibited globally.
