Birch House Drive captures a fleeting moment of autumnal beauty, observed from the artist’s studio on a crisp afternoon. Sunlight bursts through the canopy of trees, illuminating a vibrant display of gold, crimson, copper and ochre. Yet the painting is less concerned with depicting a particular place than with conveying the uplifting sensation that nature can evoke in an instant, when an ordinary view becomes unexpectedly profound.

Lees approaches the scene as a momentary impression, capturing the movement and colour of the trees as though glimpsed in passing. Expressive brushwork creates a sense of circular motion, with the foliage appearing to dance around the composition while the viewer’s gaze remains drawn towards the closed gates at its centre. This contrast between the restless movement of the trees and the stillness of the entrance lends the painting a quiet sense of balance and enclosure.

The brilliant colours suggest nature’s final flourish before the arrival of winter, a last, exuberant display of life before the landscape retreats into the muted stillness of the colder months. Beneath this celebration lies a more contemplative mood: an instinctive desire to turn inward, withdraw from the outside world and find nourishment in the quieter spaces of home and self.

The closed gates become a subtle metaphor for this seasonal transition, suggesting both protection and separation from the world beyond. They invite the viewer to consider the comfort of retreat, when the changing seasons encourage a slower rhythm of life and an opportunity for reflection.

For Lees, the painting originates in a spontaneous glance from her studio window, an instant in which the beauty of the natural world momentarily interrupts the act of painting itself. Like a fleeting memory, the scene is captured before she returns to her easel. Birch House Drive becomes a celebration of autumn’s radiant intensity, while acknowledging the quieter, inward-looking season that lies ahead.
