Rose Arch, 2024
Rose Arch explores the graceful relationship between a garden structure and the natural forms that surround it. The arching branches of the trees echo the curved framework of the rose arch, creating a rhythmic interplay between architecture and nature.
The painting draws attention to the way organic forms can appear almost deliberately composed, with the branches reaching and bending around the structure to create a natural frame. Lees uses an impressionistic approach to soften the boundaries between the cultivated garden and the surrounding landscape, allowing foliage, branches and light to merge into a harmonious whole.
Rich, layered brushwork captures the movement and texture of the vegetation, while subtle variations in colour create depth and guide the viewer through the scene. The rose arch becomes both the focal point and a quiet passage into the garden beyond.
Rather than depicting the garden simply as a place, Rose Arch considers the delicate balance between what is shaped by human hands and what is shaped by nature, finding beauty in the way the two gradually become intertwined.
